Average Speed Calculator

Work out your average speed from the distance and the travel time, in km/h and mph.

The distance you covered, in kilometers or miles, for example from your route planner or the odometer.

The number of full hours the trip took.

The minutes on top of the full hours, from 0 to 59. An hour and a half is 1 hour and 30 minutes.

How the calculation works

This calculator shows how fast you drove, cycled or ran on average. Enter the distance and the travel time in hours and minutes to get your average speed in km/h and in mph.

The hours plus the minutes divided by 60 give the travel time in hours. The distance divided by that time is the average speed in km/h. Divided by 1.609344 (kilometers per mile) it is the speed in mph. If you enter the distance in miles, the calculator first converts it to kilometers.

The speed is rounded to one decimal, with a half rounded up. If the travel time is 0, the result is 0, because you cannot divide by 0.

It is an average over the whole trip: stops and speeding up count too, so your top speed was higher.

Formula

Average speed = distance ÷ (hours + minutes ÷ 60). Speed in mph = speed in km/h ÷ 1.609344.

Assumptions

  • The speed is an average over the whole distance and the whole travel time.
  • All the time you enter counts, including stops and breaks.
  • The distance is the distance actually covered, not as the crow flies.
  • Seconds are not included: you enter the travel time in whole minutes.
  • The speed is rounded to one decimal.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate average speed?

Divide the distance by the time in hours. 150 km in 1 hour and 30 minutes (1.5 hours) is 150 ÷ 1.5 = 100 km/h. 100 miles in 2 hours is 50 mph.

What is my speed if I drive 45 km in half an hour?

Half an hour is 0.5 hours. 45 ÷ 0.5 = 90 km/h on average, which is 55.9 mph.

How many km/h is 60 mph?

A mile is 1.609344 km, so 60 mph is 60 × 1.609344 = 96.6 km/h. The other way round, 100 km/h is about 62.1 mph.

How do I convert a running pace to speed?

Divide 60 by your pace in minutes per kilometer or per mile. A pace of 6 minutes per kilometer is 60 ÷ 6 = 10 km/h, and 10 minutes per mile is 6 mph. In the calculator, enter 1 km and 6 minutes.

Why is my average speed lower than I expected?

All the time counts, including waiting at traffic lights, speeding up and slowing down. Your speed on the open road is therefore higher than your average over the whole trip.

How do average speed cameras work?

They record when a vehicle passes two points a known distance apart. That distance divided by the time taken is the average speed: the same calculation as this calculator.
