Please note: The prices are national averages per month from Statistics Netherlands (CBS): the variable supply rate plus energy tax, including VAT. Standing charges, network costs and the energy tax rebate are not included. What you paid yourself depends on your contract.
How it works
How much did electricity or gas cost in the Netherlands during the energy crisis, and how does that compare with now? Pick a month from January 2021 and see the average price with taxes then, next to the newest month. Add your yearly use to see the cost per year then and now.
The prices come from the consumer energy prices of Statistics Netherlands (CBS): the average variable supply rate of all fixed and variable contracts, plus energy tax and, until 2023, the sustainable energy surcharge, including VAT. Standing charges, network costs and the energy tax rebate are not included.
In 2023 the Dutch price cap applied: up to 2,900 kWh of electricity and 1,200 m³ of gas a year, households paid at most a fixed price. For those months the CBS also gives the average price with the cap, shown as well. The price then in today's money uses the CBS consumer price index.

Why is the price different from my bill?
This is the national average of all contracts. On a fixed contract you paid the price of the moment you signed; standing charges and network costs come on top, and the energy tax rebate comes off.
What was the price cap?
In 2023 Dutch households paid at most € 0.40 per kWh and € 1.45 per m³, with taxes, for use up to 2,900 kWh of electricity and 1,200 m³ of gas a year. Above that, the normal contract price applied.
