How the calculation works
What a car really costs only shows once you add everything up: depreciation, fuel or electricity, and fixed costs such as insurance, tax and maintenance. An electric car often costs more to buy but less to run; a petrol car is cheaper to buy but costs more per kilometer. That is why the costs of two cars do not rise at the same pace. This calculator adds them up month by month and shows where the lines cross.
For each car the calculator adds up three items every month. Depreciation is a fixed percentage per year of the remaining value; between two whole years it uses a fraction of a year. The energy cost is the distance per month × the consumption ÷ 100 × the energy price. The fixed costs are added every month. The break-even point is the moment both cars have cost the same in total; if it falls between two whole months, it is estimated with a straight line between those months. The difference is the total cost of car B minus that of car A at the end of the period: positive means car A is cheaper, negative means car B is cheaper. A distance in miles is converted to kilometers first.
Formula
Cost after t months = purchase price × (1 − (1 − depreciation ÷ 100)^(t ÷ 12)) + (distance per month × consumption ÷ 100 × energy price + fixed costs per month) × t. Difference = total cost of car B − total cost of car A.
Assumptions
- Depreciation is the same percentage of the remaining value every year.
- Consumption, energy price and fixed costs stay the same for the whole period.
- Both cars cover the same distance per year.
- Interest on a car loan, or interest lost on savings, is not included.
- Subsidies, company car tax and one-off costs only count if they are included in the purchase price or the fixed costs.
- A break-even point between two whole months is estimated with a straight line.

Frequently asked questions
What is the break-even point?
The moment both cars have cost the same in total. After that, one car is cheaper than the other. If the lines do not cross within the chosen period, the same car stays cheaper for the whole period.
Why is depreciation included?
A car does not only cost what you spend on fuel or charging. After a few years the car is also worth less, and that loss is a cost. A more expensive car usually loses more value in money terms.
How does the calculator work out depreciation?
With a fixed percentage per year of the remaining value. At 15%, a car bought for 30,000 is worth 25,500 after one year and 21,675 after two. In practice a new car loses more in its first year than later, so this is a simplification.
Does the calculator include subsidies, company car tax or road tax?
Only what you enter. Road tax belongs in the fixed costs per month, and a purchase subsidy can be taken off the purchase price. Company car tax is not included; it can be added to the fixed costs.
What if the energy price changes?
Fuel and electricity prices go up and down. Try a higher or lower price to see how sensitive the break-even point is to it. The calculator uses one price for the whole period.
Can I compare two petrol cars?
Yes. Enter the consumption in liters per 100 km and the price per liter for both cars. For an electric car, enter kWh per 100 km and the price per kWh. That way any combination works: petrol, diesel, LPG, hybrid or electric.
