Please note: The calculation uses the consumer price index (CPI) of Statistics Netherlands (CBS): how the prices of what Dutch households buy changed on average. For a single product it can be different. Before 1996 the series is an approximation that CBS linked from older series.
How it works
How much more expensive did things get in a given year in the Netherlands? This page shows the inflation of every year since 1900, the average by decade and the inflation of now. Choose a year to see it at the top.
Inflation is the rise of the general price level. We measure it with the consumer price index (CPI) of CBS, the Dutch statistics office: the price of what households buy on average. The inflation of a year is the change of the yearly index against the year before.
For the years from 1900 we use the series with 1900 = 100. CBS built it from older series; before 1996 it is an approximation. The inflation of now is the index of the newest month against the same month a year earlier. The average per decade is the yearly average over those years, compounded.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the inflation sometimes differ by a tenth from what CBS reports?
We work out inflation from the index figures, which CBS publishes with one or two decimals. CBS uses more decimals. The difference is a few hundredths of a percentage point at most, and through rounding sometimes a tenth.
When is the new year added?
CBS publishes the figures for a year early in the next year. The year then appears here by itself. The inflation of now follows every month.
