    How it works

How far is it from home to work, how long does it take and what can your employer pay tax-free? Type the place or postcode of your home and your work, choose how many days a week you travel and see the distance and travel time by car, bicycle and on foot, the kilometres per year and the highest tax-free mileage allowance per year and per month.

Distance and travel time come from the own routing of Statish, on map data from OpenStreetMap (© OpenStreetMap contributors, with Valhalla). Travel time uses speed limits and no rush hour. Places and postcodes come from the Dutch register of addresses and buildings (BAG) of the Kadaster.

The kilometres per year are the distance by road, there and back, times the number of travel days: for a five-day week 214 days a year (the days the Tax Administration counts for a fixed allowance), in proportion for fewer days. The highest tax-free allowance is that number of kilometres times €0.25 per kilometre. The Tax Administration counts the most customary road, which is not always the shortest. An employer does not have to pay an allowance. This is an indication.

    Frequently asked questions

Does my employer have to pay my travel costs?

No. An employer does not have to pay a mileage allowance for commuting. If one is paid, the amount up to €0.25 per kilometre is tax-free. Whether you get one, and how much, is set in your employment contract or collective agreement.

Which distance counts for the allowance?

According to the Tax Administration, the most customary road between home and work. That is not always the shortest route, and not always the fastest. That is why you see both here.

Why does the tool use a fixed number of days instead of my real working days?

For a fixed allowance an employer may count at most 214 travel days a year for a five-day week, whatever your holidays or sick days. If you work fewer days a week, we count in proportion.

Do you store my address or location?

No. We don't store what you enter and use it only for this calculation. We round a location from your device to about 100 m.
