Travel Time Calculator

Work out how long a trip takes at an average speed, in hours and minutes.

How far you travel, in kilometers or miles.

The speed you actually average, including slowing down and speeding up. Choose km/h for a distance in km and mph for miles. Mixing is fine: the calculator converts miles and mph itself.

How the calculation works

This calculator shows how long a trip takes. Enter the distance and your average speed to get the travel time in minutes and in hours and minutes.

Know how long the trip took and want your average speed instead? Use the Average Speed Calculator. For the fuel cost of the trip, use the Fuel Cost Calculator. Both are in the same category.

The distance divided by the speed is the travel time in hours. It is converted to minutes and rounded to whole minutes, with half a minute rounded up. The calculator then splits the minutes into full hours and the remaining minutes. So 59.6 minutes becomes 1 hour and 0 minutes, never 0 hours and 60 minutes.

Miles and mph are first converted to kilometers and km/h (1 mile is 1.609344 km), so you can mix them.

The result assumes a constant average speed. Breaks, traffic and traffic lights make a real trip longer, so use an average you really reach, for example about 55 mph (90 km/h) for a trip that is mostly motorway and 20 mph (30 km/h) in town.

Formula

Travel time in hours = distance ÷ speed. Travel time in minutes = travel time in hours × 60, rounded to whole minutes.

Assumptions

  • The speed is an average over the whole trip.
  • Breaks, refuelling or charging, traffic jams and waiting time are not included.
  • The distance is the length of the route by road, not as the crow flies.
  • The travel time is rounded to whole minutes.

Frequently asked questions

How long does 300 km take at 100 km/h?

Exactly 3 hours, because 300 ÷ 100 = 3. Breaks, traffic and slower stretches make it take longer in practice.

How long does it take to drive 100 miles at 60 mph?

100 ÷ 60 = 1.667 hours. The part after the decimal point times 60 gives the minutes: 0.667 × 60 = 40. So it takes 1 hour and 40 minutes.

How do I calculate travel time?

Divide the distance by the average speed. That gives the time in hours. Multiply the part after the decimal point by 60 to get the minutes: 250 km at 90 km/h is 2.78 hours, which is 2 hours and 47 minutes.

How do I convert 1.75 hours to hours and minutes?

Multiply the part after the decimal point by 60: 0.75 × 60 = 45 minutes. So 1.75 hours is 1 hour and 45 minutes.

What average speed should I enter?

A speed you really average over the whole trip, including speeding up, slowing down and traffic. It is usually well below the speed limit. If you know how long an earlier trip took, work out your average with the Average Speed Calculator.

Does the calculator include breaks and traffic?

No. It uses one average speed for the whole distance. Add the time for breaks, refuelling or charging and traffic jams yourself.
