How the calculation works

Enter a length, choose its unit and see it straight away in meters, kilometers, centimeters, miles, feet and inches. Useful for a screen size in inches, a distance in miles or a height in feet.

Your input is first converted to meters using the exact international definitions: 1 inch is 2.54 cm, 1 foot is 12 inches (0.3048 m) and 1 mile is 1,609.344 m. The length in meters is then divided by the number of meters per unit. These are the same numbers the site's calculation engine uses to convert units.

Rounding happens only at the end, with halves rounded away from zero: kilometers and miles to 6 decimal places, feet to 5, meters and inches to 4 and centimeters to 2. Every result is therefore accurate to better than a millimeter, and well-known values come out exactly, such as 1 inch = 2.54 cm and 1 mile = 1.609344 km. A very small length in a large unit can become 0 through rounding: less than half a millimeter is 0 in kilometers. Trailing zeros are left out.

Formula

Length in a unit = length in meters ÷ meters per unit. Meters per unit: kilometer 1,000, centimeter 0.01, mile 1,609.344, foot 0.3048, inch 0.0254.

Assumptions

  • 1 inch is exactly 2.54 cm and 1 foot is 12 inches, exactly 30.48 cm. These are the international definitions from 1959.
  • A mile is the ordinary statute mile of exactly 1,609.344 m, not a nautical mile of 1,852 m.
  • Inches, feet and miles are the same length in the US and the UK.
  • Rounding happens only at the end: km and miles to 6 decimal places, feet to 5, meters and inches to 4, cm to 2.
