How the calculation works
Enter a weight, choose its unit and see it straight away in kilograms, grams, pounds and stone. You also get it in pounds and ounces, as used in the US, and in stones and pounds, as used for body weight in the UK.
Your input is first converted to kilograms using the exact international definitions: 1 pound (lb) is 0.45359237 kg, 1 stone is 14 pounds (6.35029318 kg) and 1 pound is 16 ounces. The weight in kilograms is then divided by the number of kilograms per gram or per pound, and the number of pounds by 14 for stone. These are the same numbers the site's calculation engine uses to convert units.
Rounding happens only at the end, with halves rounded away from zero: kilograms, pounds and stone to 4 decimal places and grams to 2. Every result is therefore accurate to better than a gram. For pounds and ounces, the total is first rounded to 0.1 ounce and then split into whole pounds and the ounces left over. Stones and pounds work the same way, rounded to 0.1 pound. That way you get 14 lb 0 oz rather than 13 lb 16 oz. Trailing zeros are left out.
Formula
Grams = weight in kilograms ÷ 0.001. Pounds = weight in kilograms ÷ 0.45359237. Stone = pounds ÷ 14. Pounds and ounces: ounces = pounds × 16, rounded to 0.1. Whole pounds = ounces ÷ 16, rounded down. Plus ounces = the remainder after dividing by 16. Stones and pounds work the same way, with 14 pounds per stone.
Assumptions
- A pound (lb) is the international avoirdupois pound of exactly 0.45359237 kg.
- A stone is exactly 14 pounds and a pound is exactly 16 ounces.
- An ounce is the ordinary ounce of about 28.35 grams, not a troy ounce for precious metals and not a fluid ounce, which measures volume.
- Kilograms, pounds and stone are rounded to 4 decimal places and grams to 2; pounds and ounces to 0.1 ounce, stones and pounds to 0.1 pound.
