How the calculation works
What is your monthly salary as an hourly rate, or your hourly wage as an annual salary? Enter your gross pay, choose the period and your hours per week to see every amount at once.
We first turn your pay into an annual amount: an hourly wage times your hours per week times 52 weeks, weekly pay times 52 and monthly pay times 12. From that annual amount we work back to the hour, week and month.
Extra pay is a percentage of your annual pay, such as the Dutch holiday allowance. A thirteenth month is one extra month's pay a year.
Formula
Annual pay = hourly wage × hours per week × 52, or weekly pay × 52, or monthly pay × 12. Hourly wage = annual pay ÷ (hours per week × 52). Monthly pay = annual pay ÷ 12. Annual pay with extras = annual pay + extra pay + thirteenth month.
Assumptions
- All amounts are gross: before Income Tax and National Insurance.
- We use 52 weeks and 12 months a year.
- Paid holiday is part of the annual salary; overtime and bonuses are not included.
- Extra pay is worked out on the annual pay, not on the thirteenth month.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a monthly salary to an hourly rate?
Divide your monthly pay by your hours per month: hours per week times 52, divided by 12. At 37.5 hours that is 162.5 hours a month, so 2500 a month works out to about 15.38 an hour.
Is this before or after tax?
Before tax. What you take home depends on Income Tax, National Insurance and pension contributions.
Why does my payslip differ slightly?
Some employers use the actual number of working days in the year or a fixed factor from your contract. The hourly rate can then differ by a few pence.
