How the calculation works
What does your car really cost per month? Not only the fuel, but also the motor vehicle tax (MRB, wegenbelasting), the loss of value, insurance and maintenance. Fill in what you know; averages are filled in for the rest.
Fuel or electricity: kilometres per year times the consumption per 100 km times the price, divided by twelve. The price defaults to the average Euro95 pump price and the average home electricity price, both according to Statistics Netherlands (CBS).
The motor vehicle tax (motorrijtuigenbelasting, MRB) is worked out as in our road tax calculator, with the rates from 1 July 2026 and the provincial surcharge (opcenten) of your province. An electric car pays 70%. A diesel without a particulate filter pays more; that is not included here.
Depreciation: a new car loses about 20% of its value in the first year and about 10% a year after that (ANWB). The loss of value over the years you keep it is spread over the months. Insurance and maintenance default to the Nibud amounts for a compact car.
Formula
Car costs per month = fuel or electricity + motor vehicle tax + depreciation + insurance + maintenance + other costs. Per kilometre = car costs per year ÷ kilometres per year.
Assumptions
- Motor vehicle tax for a passenger car at the rates from 1 July 2026, without the particulate surcharge and without LPG.
- Depreciation of 20% in the first year of a new car and 10% a year after that.
- Loan interest is not included.
- BPM (purchase tax on a car) is not included. For an imported car it is due on registration here and adds to the price.
- A car on foreign number plates is outside this tool; Dutch MRB applies once the car is registered in the Netherlands.

Frequently asked questions
Why is the depreciation so high?
A new car loses most of its value in the first years. You only notice when you sell it, but it is still a cost. A car you keep longer costs less in depreciation per month.
Can I use the details of my own car?
Yes. Look up your number plate in the Plate Check and choose Car costs per month there. The weight, fuel and consumption are then filled in.
What is BPM and is it included?
BPM is a one-off tax on the purchase of a new or imported car, based on its CO2 emissions. It is not a separate line here: for a new Dutch car it is in the price, and for an imported car it is due when the car is registered in the Netherlands.
What if my car is on foreign number plates?
This tool works out the costs with Dutch rules. Whether a car on foreign plates may be driven in the Netherlands, and from when it must be registered here, is not covered. The Dutch vehicle authority (RDW) can answer that.
