Current prices in the calculators
Which price is already filled in for fuel, charging and energy, which CBS series it comes from and what happens when it is not available.
A few tools in the Netherlands editions of the site have today's price filled in already, so you don't have to look it up yourself. This page explains which price that is, where it comes from and when a fixed value is used instead.
Which price is filled in
The prices come from Statistics Netherlands (CBS, the Dutch national statistics office). The filled-in price is a starting value: you can always overwrite it with your own price. Under the field you can see which price it is and which day, month or quarter it applies to. For example: Average pump price Euro95 on 5 October 2026 (CBS).
| Price | What it is | Period |
|---|---|---|
| Petrol (Euro95) | average pump price per litre in the Netherlands, including excise duty and VAT (btw) | a day; CBS updates the series every week, so the latest day is a few days old |
| Charging at a public charge point | average price per kWh | a quarter; it appears about two months after the quarter ends |
| Electricity at home | price of one extra kWh: variable supply rate plus energy tax, including VAT | a month |
| Gas at home | price of one extra m³: variable supply rate plus energy tax, including VAT | a month |
Fixed costs are not included: the fixed supply charge, the grid operator charge and the energy tax reduction (vermindering energiebelasting). You pay these per year, not per kWh or m³. What exactly is in the CBS series is explained in Home energy tariffs and Pump prices.
These prices are used in:
- Fuel Cost Calculator: the Euro95 price.
- EV Charging Cost Calculator: the electricity price at home and the price at a charge point.
- Electricity Cost Calculator: the electricity price at home.
- Heating Cost Calculator and Heat Pump vs Gas Boiler: the gas price and, for the heat pump, the electricity price as well.
- Dutch Number Plate Check and Car Costs per Month Calculator Netherlands: the cost per 100 km at the CBS pump prices.
The prices are only filled in in the Netherlands editions of the site (Dutch and English), not in the UK or US editions.
When the price is not available
Our server asks our data service for the prices at most once an hour and keeps them until the next hour. A new CBS price can therefore take up to an hour to show up in a tool.
- The data service does not respond for a while. We then use the last known prices and try again after a few minutes. A page never waits for an outage.
- There is no price. If no price has come in yet, or the price falls outside what the field allows, the tool's own fixed default value is shown. You can tell by the missing line with the date under the field.
If you calculate with your own price, the starting value makes no difference.
Why solar panels use their own price
Solar Panel Payback Calculator does not use today's price. Panels pay for themselves over decades, and the electricity price of a single month says little about that whole period. The calculator therefore uses one average electricity price for the entire period: the forecast of Milieu Centraal up to 2040. You can change that price yourself. If the electricity price rises, the panels pay for themselves sooner.
Provisional figures
CBS sometimes labels its newest figures provisional: the last month of the energy tariffs and, for the quarterly prices, the last quarter of charging and CNG. We fetch everything again every day, so such a price becomes final by itself. A price you saw a week ago may therefore be slightly different now. Under the field you can see the month or quarter it belongs to. More about provisional figures is in What provisional means.
Current state of the data
How we maintain and monitor this is explained in How we keep everything up to date, and how the tools calculate in How our calculators work.
