Healthcare Benefit (Zorgtoeslag) Calculator Netherlands 2026

Work out how much healthcare benefit (zorgtoeslag) you can get in the Netherlands in 2026, per month and per year, with or without a benefits partner, with the 2026 income and assets limits.

This calculator applies Dutch rules. Text translated from Dutch; the Dutch version prevails. Open the Dutch version

Benefits partner

Your benefits partner is your spouse or registered partner. If you live together unmarried, your housemate can also be your benefits partner, for example if you have a child together, have bought a home together or have a cohabitation agreement with a notary. With a benefits partner, income and assets are added together.

Your expected collective income over the whole of 2026, together with that of your benefits partner: not your gross salary and not your net salary. If you work for an employer and have no other income, it is roughly your taxable wage.

Your savings, investments and other assets minus your debts on 1 January 2026, together with your benefits partner. The assets of a child under 18 count as well. The home you live in yourself does not count; green investments and assets abroad do. The tax-free allowance for assets is not deducted. It only matters whether you are above the limit.

Dutch rules: an indication by the 2026 calculation of the Benefits department (Dienst Toeslagen). Dienst Toeslagen sets the final amount. The amounts change every year; we check them at least once a year.

How the calculation works

How much healthcare benefit (zorgtoeslag) can you get in 2026? Choose whether you have a benefits partner and enter your qualifying income and assets. With a benefits partner you add up those of both of you. You see the amount per month and per year, and what € 1,000 more income makes. The rules are Dutch; the text is translated from Dutch.

We calculate like the Benefits department (Dienst Toeslagen) in its 2026 healthcare benefit calculation.

First the limits. If assets on 1 January 2026 are above € 146,011, or € 184,633 with a benefits partner, there is no healthcare benefit for that whole year. The same applies above a qualifying income of € 40,857, or € 51,142 with a benefits partner.

Step 1: the standard premium is € 2,119, twice as much with a benefits partner: € 4,238. Step 2: the qualifying income. With a benefits partner, your incomes are added together. Step 3: the norm premium is the part you pay yourself. It is 1.912% of the income threshold of € 29,736, or 4.289% with a benefits partner. On top of that comes 13.73% of the income above the threshold. Step 4: the healthcare benefit is the standard premium minus the norm premium.

The yearly amount is rounded to whole euros. Per month you get a twelfth of it, rounded down. A yearly amount below € 24 is not paid out; that is why the income limits are where they are.

Formula

Healthcare benefit per year = standard premium − norm premium, rounded to whole euros. Norm premium = 1.912% (with a benefits partner 4.289%) × € 29,736 + 13.73% × (qualifying income − € 29,736, not below 0). Per month = yearly amount ÷ 12, rounded down.

Assumptions

  • Amounts and limits of 2026 from the healthcare benefit calculation of the Benefits department (Dienst Toeslagen).
  • You have Dutch health insurance, are 18 or older and live in the Netherlands. If you are not an EU, EEA or Swiss national, you also need a valid residence permit that entitles you to benefits.
  • If you live abroad, Dienst Toeslagen uses a country-of-residence factor and your worldwide income. That is not part of this calculation.
  • If your benefits partner has no Dutch health insurance, for example as a member of the armed forces, the benefit is half. We do not calculate that.
  • Whether tax-free amounts such as the 30% facility count towards your income for benefits is not covered here. Check this with Dienst Toeslagen.
  • Your situation stays the same all of 2026. If something changes during the year, such as your benefits partner or your insurance, each month counts separately.
  • To calculate with all your own details, use the trial calculation for benefits (in Dutch) of Dienst Toeslagen. That also gives an indication.

Frequently asked questions

What is my qualifying income (toetsingsinkomen)?

Your collective income for income tax over 2026 (including box 3), together with that of your benefits partner; not your gross salary and not your net salary.

What is the norm premium?

The part of the standard premium that you pay yourself by law. The higher your income, the higher the norm premium and the lower your healthcare benefit. The standard premium is a fixed amount for the calculation: roughly the average premium plus the average deductible.

What does € 1,000 more income make?

Above the income threshold of € 29,736, the norm premium rises by 13.73% of every extra euro. € 1,000 more income then gives about € 137 less healthcare benefit per year, € 11 or € 12 per month. Below the threshold nothing changes. Just below the income limit it can be more, because the benefit stops there.

Why does the healthcare benefit stop at € 40,857?

At a higher qualifying income the benefit falls below € 24 a year, and such a small amount is not paid out. With a benefits partner that point is at € 51,142.

I am not Dutch. Can I get healthcare benefit?

The conditions are: legal residence in the Netherlands, Dutch health insurance and, if you are not an EU, EEA or Swiss national, a valid residence permit that entitles you to benefits. The general conditions apply too. See the page of the Tax Administration for people who are not Dutch (in English, linked under sources).

What counts as assets?

Your assets minus your debts on 1 January 2026, together with your benefits partner, such as savings, investments and assets abroad. The assets of a child under 18 count as well. The home you live in yourself does not count.

How do I apply for healthcare benefit?

Through Mijn toeslagen on the website of the Tax Administration, with your DigiD (both in Dutch; DigiD needs a Dutch citizen service number, the BSN). You then get an advance every month. You can also apply afterwards, up to 1 September of the year after: for 2026 that is 1 September 2027.

What if my income turns out different?

The advance is based on the income you give. After the year ends, Dienst Toeslagen sets the amount with your actual income: if the advance was too high you pay back the difference, if it was too low you receive it. You report a change during the year in Mijn toeslagen.
